Early Nile boat painted on a pottery vessel, late Predynastic (Naqada II) Period. ) The Nile was always the principal means of transport in Egypt, and the sailing and construction of boats can be traced back to the papyrus rafts of the Predynasric Period. Boats were commonly depicted in red paint 011 the buff-coloured pottery of the Naqada 11 Period (figure 44). The carved relief decoration on a Naqada 11 ivory knife handle from Gebel el-Arak (Louvre, figure 45) is the earliest Egyptian depiction of a naval battle.

During the period of 340 years from the first Assyrian conquest until the arrival of Alexander the Great in 332 BC, the military history of Egypt was characterised by a complicated succession of peaks and troughs.
